Public Trustee takes leaf out of Queensland

Last year, the Queensland Public Trustee prepared 28,272 wills for Queenslanders in Australia. They are also the largest will-makers in the Southern Hemisphere and the biggest Public Trustee in Australia, which has eight Public Trustees – one for each of their state and territories. Read more


Though little known, the office of the Public Trustee, is one of the oldest and richest government departments in the country. Things over the years however, have not gone too well for a department which is supposed to win the ‘Trust’ of the public. According to its 2016 Performance Report to Parliament, it had 1,067 active trusts, 140 active estates and contributed a little over Rs 14 million to the Treasury. From 2012-2014 however, it was contributing an average number of Rs 6 million to the Treasury, even though 35 active trusts and eight active estates were added to its portfolio during the same period. Sir D.B. Jayatileke’s Last Will… His Legacy – The Office of Public Trustee!

On the corner of Bauddhaloka Mawatha (once known as Bullers Road) and Bullers Lane, lies Thurban House. For many years, it stood, unassuming, and for many people, almost lost in sight. This was until Sanath Weeratne, the Public Trustee, started refurbishing it. This year, they unveiled a statue in front of it. It was the statue of Sir D.B. Jayatilaka - this year was his 150th birth anniversary and tomorrow (29) will be his 74th death anniversary. Read more


Last week, the Colombo District Court allowed the Public Trustee Department to open the last will of 254 people. Public Trustee, W.G.S. Weeratne speaking to Daily News said, he embarked on the beginning of this legal quagmire as a means to bring justice to all those who had faith in the Public Trustee to do the right thing for the last 87 years, so that the Public Trustee can finally grant the wishes of all these men and women who have passed away having had faith in the Trustee. Court permits Public Trustee to open 252 last wills

The Colombo District Court yesterday permitted the Public Trustee’s Department to open 252 last wills pertaining to the colossal amount of wealth which were under the Public Trustee’s supervision. The documents pertaining to concerned last wills were yesterday produced before court by the Public Trustee. Colombo Additional District Judge Chamath Madanayaka made this order pursuant to a request made by incumbent Public Trustee Sanath Weeratne. Read more
