The Public Trustee of Sri Lanka is solely built to serve through its efficient trustee and estate administration services to the community of Sri Lanka irrespective of their rank, race, sex, colour, language or religion.

Our objective since the very beginning has always been to ensure that we create and help steadily maintain the trust that has been placed on us by the people of Sri Lanka to provide positive outcomes by managing and strongly upholding the affairs of our clients and contribute to the wellbeing of this nation.

Awarding Scholarship

This programme encompasses trusts established with the primary objective of providing educational assistance. Under these trusts, scholarships and financial assistance are awarded to students pursuing their studies at schools and universities, in accordance with the objectives specified in the relevant trust instruments.

Granting Medical Aid

Under this programme, financial assistance and medical aid are provided to hospitals and individuals in need of medical treatment in accordance with the objectives stipulated in the respective wills and trust instruments. Beneficiaries are selected through a formal application process, ensuring that assistance is granted in accordance with the terms and conditions of the relevant trusts.

Development & Maintenance of Religious Property

Under this programme, payments and assistance are provided to religious institutions and organisations in accordance with the objectives and provisions set out in the respective wills and trust deeds. Such disbursements are made in compliance with the terms and conditions governing the relevant trusts.

Charity & Donations

The Department of Public Trustee facilitates the establishment of trusts under the provisions of the Public Trustee Ordinance for various social welfare and charitable purposes.

Through these trusts, a range of welfare programmes are implemented, including religious activities, scholarships, medical assistance, and child and elderly welfare initiatives.

Individuals and organizations may establish trusts within the Department of Public Trustee through monetary donations to support social welfare and charitable activities. Interested parties are invited to contact the Department for further information and assistance in this regard.

In addition, generous donations may also be made to existing trusts that are engaged in carrying out the above-mentioned social welfare and charitable programmes.

Application for trust

Property Management

The Department administers movable and immovable properties vested in the Public Trustee through court orders, appointments as administrator, or under the provisions of wills and testamentary instruments. The income generated from these properties is utilized to fulfil the intentions and objectives of the respective owners or benefactors. Such activities include the provision of medical assistance, educational scholarships, charitable grants, and the welfare and maintenance of beneficiaries.

Other Services

Foreign Compensation

The Department is responsible for administering compensation payments received in respect of Sri Lankan nationals employed overseas who have died or suffered permanent disability while engaged in foreign employment. Such compensation payments are referred to the Department of the Public Trustee through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Temple Compensation

In terms of the Temple Lands Compensation Ordinance No. 28 of 1944, compensation awarded in respect of temple lands acquired by the State for public purposes is deposited with the Department of the Public Trustee.

Personal Trust

Personal Trusts relate to the fulfilment of trust objectives established under trusts and wills administered by the Department, where the beneficiaries are specifically identified and the purposes are of a private nature rather than for a general public benefit.
